Experiences as an interpreter (2nd Part)

If you didn't read my first part go to my December 2004 posts, the one for December 6.

Remember that there are 3 people in our calls: the client (english), the LEP (spanish) and me (the interpreter). I am giving examples today of any type of call.

Scenario # 1
Client: Hello interpreter, please ask the lady why is she calling in today? How may we help her?
Interpreter: Buenos días Sra. yo le voy a servir de intérprete en esta llamada, por qué está llamando en el día de hoy? Cómo le podemos ayudar? - (Good morning ma'am, I will be your interpreter during this call, why are you calling today? how may we help you?)
LEP: Habla español? - (Speak spanish?)
Interpreter: (thinking it but not voicing it - HELLO?!, didn't I just spoke to you in spanish, what I am speaking...Russian?!)...................proceeds in spanish...Yes ma'am, I am talking to you in spanish. How may we help you today?.

Scenario # 2
It is a 911 call. The LEP is calling because his vehicle broke down on the highway. LEP is outside of his vehicle, there seems to be a lot of traffic because the interpreter can barely hear him and there is a lot of background noise.

911 dispatcher: Ask him his location?
Int: Sir, where are you located?
LEP: on the highway.
Int: (thinking...of course you already told us that) interprets what was said.
911: what part of the highway?
Int: interprets into spanish
LEP: Hhhmmm......(hesitating)...before........"jshdmisnsdkd".
The interpreter just hears something very muffled and there is a lot of background noise.
Int: where sir? (in spanish)
LEP: before exit..jfdjkshsh...(very muffled still, not understandable)
Int: explains to 911 that there is a lot of background noise and can't make out what the LEP is saying.
911: Please tell him to get inside his vehicle so that we can better hear him.
Int: interprets into spanish.
LEP: OK.
Suddenly you hear the door of the car closing and blessedly no more noise.
Int: Sir, where are you?
LEP: inside my vehicle.

Can you believe it? After all your effort, straining to hear the exact location. Now he gives you this answer. Hehehehe.

Scenario # 3
LEP is calling to get some information about her account.
Bank rep: Could you please give me your name and account number?
Int: into spanish
LEP: Juana González and my account number is 35 (thirty five) 84 (eighty four) 28 (twenty eight) 90 (ninety).

Note: So that there is no misunderstanding the interpreter usually breaks down the numbers individually when giving them back to the client.

Int: The name is Juana G. and the account number is 3 (three) 5 (five) 8 (eight) 4 (four) 2 (two) 8 (eight) 9 (nine) o (zero).
LEP: NOOOOOOOO!!!! I said 35 (thirty five) 84 (eighty four) 28 (twenty eight) 90 (ninety).
Int: (in spanish)...ma'am let me verify the numbers with you and let me know if they are correct...3 (three) 5 (five) 8 (eight)............
LEP: (interrupting the interpreter)........NOOOOO!!! I said.......
Int: (interpreter lets her finish and trying to hold to the little patience left)......... goes back to the client and explains the situation.

This is a very common case and it is one that can upset me a lot. They make you look as if you are not interpreting correctly. Imagine all that talk and the client just there waiting to see what is going on. UUUFFF!!!! Patience please!

Scenario # 4
Client understands a little bit of spanish.
Client: ask her for her address?
Int: interprets into spanish.
LEP: 4284 Somerset Dr., Apt. 2-A, Glendale Heights.
Int: into english
Client: (pauses)..........ask her if it's 4284 Somerset Dr. or 4482 Somerset Dr.?
Int: Ma'am is it 4284 Somerset Dr. or........
LEP: (interrupting the interpreter)........Yes.
Int: .....or 4482 Somerset Dr.
LEP: Yes
Client: (snapping a little bit) so which one is it?
Int: (thinking......welcome to my everyday world)

Scenario # 5
FEMA application
Client: please explain to him that I am going to be asking a series of only yes or no questions. Any further explanation can be given to the inspector once he comes out.
Int: into spanish
LEP: Ok
Client: did you have damages to your personal property?
Int: into spanish
LEP: yes, in my bedroom the beds got all wet, and then also a dining room set, and the couch......kitchen, appliances.....etc, etc, etc.....bla,bla,bla.
Int: (writing all the information as fast as possible, so not to leave anything out).....into english.
Client: Ask her if any of his vehicles suffered any damages as a result of the disaster?
Int: into spanish
LEP: Well I don't have a vehicle but my son does, he doesn't live here with me, but I think his vehicle had damages, I am not sure.
Int: into english (you could almost feel the clients impatience)
Client: are the access routes to his home clear?
Int: into spanish
LEP: Well........(here the int. is bracing him/herself for the LEP's answer)............at the beginning just when the storm happened , nobody could pass through, you should have seen it, it was awful. But then they came and ....bla...bla....bla.
Int: into english.
Client: Interpreter please ask him to just answer yes or no. (Impatience on the clients tone).
Int: (thinking.........finally!!!!)

So much for yes or no answers, right? I have come to the conclusion that americans are very precise and hispanics just love to tell you the whole story. Even when they have told you that they'll answer yes or no, they always want to tell you a story with it. I do not like that because instead of just having to interpret yes or no...I end up having to write a lot and then talking a lot. There are some people who speak really fast, so that makes it harder for us to write down the information. And sometimes the things that they are telling you are not even relevant to the conversation. It is specially frustrating when doing a recorded statement for a vehicle accident.

Scenario # 6
Client: please tell her to fax over the paperwork to finish her case.
Int: into spanish.
LEP: Ok. Do you need me to fax the originals or the copies?
Int: (thinking how this is going to sound to the client).......into english.
Client: (pause .......and then a little bit of low giggling).........it doesn't matter.

These are just a few examples. I will write some others a next time.

The Classic IQ Test

Well I found this test by chance on Tickle and thought you'd like it, too. Take it and see how you score. My score was 126. They said that my intellectual type is inspired inventor and that it means I have exceptional verbal and mathematical skills, and that I'm very good at brainstorming new ideas.

I've been tagged

I've been tagged by Micah, which means I have to choose 5 occupations from the list below and give my answers and then tag 3 other people to give their answers on their blog.

The Questions:
If I could be a scientist...If I could be a farmer...If I could be a musician...If I could be a doctor...If I could be a painter...If I could be a gardener...If I could be a missionary...If I could be a chef...If I could be an architect...If I could be a linguist...If I could be a psychologist...If I could be a librarian...If I could be an athlete...If I could be a lawyer...If I could be an inn-keeper...If I could be a professor...If I could be a writer...If I could be a llama-rider...If I could be a bonnie pirate...If I could be an astronaut...If I could be a world famous blogger...If I could be a justice on any one court in the world...If I could be married to any current famous political figure...

My Answers:

If I could be a linguist...I would study as many languages as possible and try to share the Jesus that I know with the people who speak these languages. Also if I could translate the Bible into their language if it hasn't been done before, I would certainly try. I am not a linguist, I am far from that, but it is the closest to what I am doing right now which is an interpreter and I enjoy what I do very much.

If I could be a astronaut...I would just enjoy the discovery. The being to see and marvel at God's perfect creation. I am sure it would be awe-inspiring. I am already awed by the creation I can see right now, imagine seeing a little more of this vast universe?

If I could be a justice on any one court in the world...I would try to perform the justice needed to the best of my ability and knowlegde. I wouldn't let myself be bribed or bought, a practice that is very common in my country. Where it means that if you have enough money, many things can be lost, changed or simply disappear. I would try to fight corruption with everything I have available as a justice.

If I could be a writer...I would like to write something that would inspire people, give them hope, lift their spirits, let them know that not everything is lost, that things do happen for a reason. I think we have enough depressing writings out there to add one more.

If I could be a doctor...besides the usual of helping your patients have a healthy lifestyle and keep them as healthy as possible, I think I would study a lot. If you are a Christian and a doctor at the same time, I think there is a special understanding of God's creation, that a normal person wouldn't have unless you investigate. As a doctor you can marvel at the life provided by our blood, the composition of our blood and why is it so important to God, that without it we die. Every cell, vein, artery. When a doctor sees through a microscope and he sees the cells, the platelets, everything is so accurate, so precise, so exact. How our brains are so much better than a computer and how can it store so much information. How our eyes are like a lens and how they adjust to see near and far. How all our body parts are where they are supposed to be and how they complement each other. How a child is created and grows and nurtures in his mothers body. And all this is from my very limited perspective as I am not a doctor at all. And of course sharing what I've studied with others.

P.S. Arturo, I am tagging you so...como no tienes blog dame tus respuestas como un comentario o por e-mail.

Principle of Proclamation

I started writing this on april 6. It wasn't until today that I could finish it. There were several days during this month that the computer broke down and the part needed was not available so that is the reason why I haven't been writing on the blog for some time. I apologize if there are any mistakes because of my translation from spanish to english.

This message was a continuing one my pastor started on Friday. I didn't go to church on Friday so I missed it. On Friday from what I heard he spoke about the principle of incubation. On Sunday, he spoke about the principle of proclamation.

Genesis 1:3 - And God said, "Let there be light," and there was light.

The phrase "God said" appears several times on Genesis 1. Every creative act of God is preceded by a "God said". If God wouldn't have said then nothing would have ever existed. Without proclamation there is no existence.

There are four conclusions of this principle.

1) A proclamation brings into the natural world, what already is on the spiritual world.

Hebrews 11:3 - By faith we understand that the universe was formed at God's command, so that what is seen was not made out of what was visible.

If you look up King James Version, you'll see that it says by the word of God instead of God's command, it means the same using different wording. What made the universe? the word of God.

Psalms 33:6 - By the word of the LORD were the heavens made, their starry host by the breath of his mouth.
Psalms 33:9 - For he spoke, and it came to be; he commanded, and it stood firm.

God created because it was his will, his desire. God had it in his mind, but for it to exist God spoke.

Mark 1:40-42 - And there came a leper to him, beseeching him, and kneeling down to him, and saying unto him, If thou wilt, thou canst make me clean. And Jesus, moved with compassion, put forth his hand, and touched him, and said unto him, I will; be thou clean. And as soon as he had spoken, immediately the leprosy departed from him, and he was cleansed.

He was not clean until Jesus sent the word "I will; be thou clean". Do you think Jesus wanted to heal him? Since when? Since always, and it happened as soon as he had spoken.
Where nothing has existed before, but God speaks, something is going to exist. The original creation happened when "God said". Every detail needed a "God said": the light, the starts, the seas, the moon, the animals, the sun, man. God has the desire to bless you and you need to proclaim that.

2) It says on verse 2 that the earth was "formless and empty". Proclamation produces order and fullness.

If you've ever had to fix a son's or daughter's room, you probably had to go in and fix everything one by one with your hands. That was not Gods case, he didn't do anything with his hands, it was with his word. When I proclaim something what it's in disorder has to order itself. People have accepted disorder in their lives. Financial, sentimental, emotional, eating disorders. 15 year-old girls giving birth to other children. Now is the time for proclaiming, for putting everything in order.
The world, television, philosophers don't understand this but the one that receives it he or she will understand.

Deuteronomy 6:6-9 - And these words, which I command thee this day, shall be in thine heart: And thou shalt teach them diligently unto thy children, and shalt talk of them when thou sittest in thine house, and when thou walkest by the way, and when thou liest down, and when thou risest up. And thou shalt bind them for a sign upon thine hand, and they shall be as frontlets between thine eyes. And thou shalt write them upon the posts of thy house, and on thy gates.

Speak the word of God. The proclaimed word brings order. When you proclaim it the spiritual world perceives it. Elijah proclaimed it and he knew the rain was coming.

1 Kings 18:1 - After a long time, in the third year, the word of the LORD came to Elijah: "Go and present yourself to Ahab, and I will send rain on the land."

1 Kings 18:41-46 - And Elijah said to Ahab, "Go, eat and drink, for there is the sound of a heavy rain." So Ahab went off to eat and drink, but Elijah climbed to the top of Carmel, bent down to the ground and put his face between his knees. "Go and look toward the sea," he told his servant.

And he went up and looked. "There is nothing there," he said.
Seven times Elijah said, "Go back."
The seventh time the servant reported, "A cloud as small as a man's hand is rising from the sea." So Elijah said, "Go and tell Ahab, 'Hitch up your chariot and go down before the rain stops you.' " Meanwhile, the sky grew black with clouds, the wind rose, a heavy rain came on and Ahab rode off to Jezreel. The power of the LORD came upon Elijah and, tucking his cloak into his belt, he ran ahead of Ahab all the way to Jezreel
.

He who belongs to God, listens to the word of God. There are some things that come through prayer, but there are others that come through proclamation.

Ezekiel 37: 1-10 - The hand of the LORD was upon me, and he brought me out by the Spirit of the LORD and set me in the middle of a valley; it was full of bones. He led me back and forth among them, and I saw a great many bones on the floor of the valley, bones that were very dry. He asked me, "Son of man, can these bones live?"
I said, "O Sovereign LORD , you alone know."
Then he said to me, "Prophesy to these bones and say to them, 'Dry bones, hear the word of the LORD ! This is what the Sovereign LORD says to these bones: I will make breath enter you, and you will come to life. I will attach tendons to you and make flesh come upon you and cover you with skin; I will put breath in you, and you will come to life. Then you will know that I am the LORD .' "
So I prophesied as I was commanded. And as I was prophesying, there was a noise, a rattling sound, and the bones came together, bone to bone. I looked, and tendons and flesh appeared on them and skin covered them, but there was no breath in them. Then he said to me, "Prophesy to the breath; prophesy, son of man, and say to it, 'This is what the Sovereign LORD says: Come from the four winds, O breath, and breathe into these slain, that they may live.' "So I prophesied as he commanded me, and breath entered them; they came to life and stood up on their feet-a vast army
.

Proclamation brings order and fullness. They came together bone to bone. It wasn't that a wrist came together with an ankle, they came together in perfect order.

3) If God proclaims, then everything has been said, God doesn't have to say anything else.

Is there any emptiness or disorder in your life? In your emotions, in your pockets, in your family, in your job, in your health?

Jesus was baptized, the Holy Spirit descended upon him, he was then taken into the wilderness and was tempted by satan and then...

Luke 4:17-21 - The scroll of the prophet Isaiah was handed to him. Unrolling it, he found the place where it is written: The Spirit of the Lord is on me, because he has anointed me to preach good news to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim freedom for the prisoners and recovery of sight for the blind, to release the oppressed, to proclaim the year of the Lord's favor. Then he rolled up the scroll, gave it back to the attendant and sat down. The eyes of everyone in the synagogue were fastened on him, and he began by saying to them, Today this scripture is fulfilled in your hearing".

Jesus was reading from Isaiah 61. He rolled the scroll and sat down. Everyone was expecting him to say something. It is like if you are at a Sunday service, your pastor just reads a passage of scripture and then sits down, of course you are expecting him to say something else. But then Jesus says "today this scripture is fulfilled". What is to proclaim? It is to personalize the word of God. Jesus was saying, what you read in Isaiah 61 it's me. To proclaim is to take what God has said (what it says on his word) and put it in your mouth. If you speak, speak according to the word of God. Proclaim the blessings of God.

God spoke to Moses, from Moses to Aaron, from Aaron and his children to the people.
Numbers 6:22-27 - The LORD said to Moses, "Tell Aaron and his sons, 'This is how you are to bless the Israelites. Say to them:

"The LORD bless you
and keep you;
the LORD make his face shine upon you
and be gracious to you;
the LORD turn his face toward you
and give you peace." "So they will put my name on the Israelites, and I will bless them."

When Aaron does this, my name is going to be among the people and I will bless them. His name is God himself. Take the word that I have given you and give it to them, and my name will be among them. Many learned this:

  • the ones that Noah blessed are blessed until today. (Genesis 9:25-27 - he said, "Cursed be Canaan! The lowest of slaves will he be to his brothers." He also said,
"Blessed be the LORD , the God of Shem!
May Canaan be the slave of Shem.
    May God extend the territory of Japheth ;
may Japheth live in the tents of Shem,
and may Canaan be his slave
    .")
  • Isaac blessed his youngest (Genesis 27:27-29)
  • Jeremiah 1:9-10
  • Exodus 14:13-16 - Moses answered the people, "Do not be afraid. Stand firm and you will see the deliverance the LORD will bring you today. The Egyptians you see today you will never see again. The LORD will fight for you; you need only to be still." Then the LORD said to Moses, "Why are you crying out to me? Tell the Israelites to move on. Raise your staff and stretch out your hand over the sea to divide the water so that the Israelites can go through the sea on dry ground.

God told Moses "Why are you crying out to me? TELL the Israelites". Sometimes you have to stop praying and start proclaiming. Prayer is totally necessary we definitely need to pray. There is a connection between your mouth and the glory of God. Take what God has said and put it in your mouth - proclaim! God has said too much for you not to have anything to proclaim about.

4) Proclamation activate Gods plans. Mobilize what God wants to do.

1 Kings 17:1 - "there will be neither dew nor rain in the next few years except at my word". The rain wasn't going to fall until Elijah proclaimed it.

Ezekiel 37:3-4,7 - He asked me, "Son of man, can these bones live?" I said, "O Sovereign LORD , you alone know." Then he said to me, "Prophesy to these bones and say to them, 'Dry bones, hear the word of the LORD! So I prophesied as I was commanded. And as I was prophesying, there was a noise, a rattling sound, and the bones came together, bone to bone.

Ezekiel could dry himself fasting, but the bones were going to remain dry. Fasting is good but sometimes you have to proclaim.

1 Corinthians 1:21 - For since in the wisdom of God the world through its wisdom did not know him, God was pleased through the foolishness of what was preached to save those who believe.

What is to preach? Is to proclaim what God has said. When you say to someone "God loves you", something stirs. You have prayed (excellent), you have fasted (wonderful), now proclaim. Activate what you have been praying for. They are all connected.

Joel 3:9-10 - Proclaim this among the nations:
Prepare for war!
Rouse the warriors!
Let all the fighting men draw near and attack.
Beat your plowshares into swords
and your pruning hooks into spears.
Let the weakling say,
"I am strong!"

Proclaim this among the nations. Let's defeat them! Let the weak say: I am strong; let the poor say: I am rich; let the sick say: I am healed. First you incubate it with the Holy Spirit through prayer and fasting, then you proclaim it.

Mark 4:37-39 - A furious squall came up, and the waves broke over the boat, so that it was nearly swamped. Jesus was in the stern, sleeping on a cushion. The disciples woke him and said to him, "Teacher, don't you care if we drown?" He got up, rebuked the wind and said to the waves, "Quiet! Be still!" Then the wind died down and it was completely calm.

Jesus just said: "Quiet! Be still!"

John 11:39-43 - "Take away the stone," he said. "But, Lord," said Martha, the sister of the dead man, "by this time there is a bad odor, for he has been there four days."
Then Jesus said, "Did I not tell you that if you believed, you would see the glory of God?"
So they took away the stone. Then Jesus looked up and said, "Father, I thank you that you have heard me. I knew that you always hear me, but I said this for the benefit of the people standing here, that they may believe that you sent me."
When he had said this, Jesus called in a loud voice, "Lazarus, come out!"

Did Jesus do a fasting and prayer service in front of Lazarus tomb? There is a time for everything. He first asked for the stone to be removed, then he incubated it with a quick prayer and then he just proclaimed something. Remove the stone of ignorance, the stone of lack of faith, the stone of doubt and then "Lazarus, come out!". Jesus spoke to the sickness, to the demons, to circumstances, to the storm, to plants

But you can't go around proclaiming anything or whatever you want. You have to proclaim what God has told you, what He has said, what is on His word. You also have to be willing to accept the consequences of what you proclaim. Prepare for what is coming.

Psalms 116:10 - I believed; therefore I said. He was afflicted, in distress, like dying, but something came over him. He believed therefore he spoke. I dare to speak it so I am going to live. The one who believes also speaks.

Paul also mentioned this on 2 Corinthians 4:13, with that same spirit of faith he said - It is written: "I believed; therefore I have spoken."With that same spirit of faith we also believe and therefore speak".

If you do not believe then do not proclaim, because just speaking from your mouth out does not work.

Whatever God says He will also see it afterwards.

In Genesis 1:3 - God said, Genesis 1:4 - God saw

Gn. 1:9 - God said, Gn. 1:10 - God saw

and so forth in Gn. 11 He said in Gn. 12 He saw; in Gn. 14 He said in Gn. 18 He saw, etc. It was good, He liked what He saw and it was useful. What you proclaim is going to end up being something good and useful. Because what would you do with something that is pretty but has no use at all? God is not going to give you something that is going to become a headache. God felt good when He made the light, the plants, man. He felt pleased. What did He see?

1. Order

2. Variety

3. Might - when you see God's creation you can't help but see power.

4. Beauty

5. Accuracy - when you take a look at the solar system, how the earth moves around the sun and how it moves in it's own axis, everything is perfect. What God is going to bring you is going to fit precisely.

6. Admirable - just look at a lake, a river, a newborn. WONDER!!

7. Mystery - how was the blood formed? what surrounds us? There are things that nobody will be able to explain to you, that only God knows. How did you end up meeting that person?

PROCLAIM GOD'S BLESSINGS FOR YOUR LIFE!

Proverbs 18:21 - The tongue has the power of life and death.

Eclipse 2005

Today we will be able to see an eclipse here in Panama. It will be a hybrid solar eclipse and part of it's path will pass through Panama. It will be seen in different countries like Costa Rica, Colombia and Venezuela besides here. But from what I've read the best place to see it will be Panama because in the other countries it will be seen at places where the jungle is very thick or the places are very secluded, so it will be very difficult to get there and also here is the only country where you'll be able to see it from start to finish. As a result we have scientists and tourists from all over the world coming here to observe it.

We have scientists and astronomers from NASA, Johnson Space Center, France, Belgium, England, Spain, Japan and Iran. Also American scientists from the University of North Dakota that will be observing the phenomenon from a very sophisticated telescope.

The eclipse will start in the South Pacific (Pacific Ocean) as annular, several kilometers later it will become a total eclipse and then back to annular. We will be able to see it like around 3:30 p.m. until like 6:00 p.m. We have to use special glasses to look at it, and we should not look directly into the sun at the time of the eclipse because it can cause damages to your vision. To learn more about it you can check the APAA (Panamanian Association of Amateur Astronomers) and there they give links to other pages.

Maybe I should join this association, it would be very interesting.

It's the only thing on all the channels

Every local channel and even some international channels that you tune in are talking about the pope. First that he was dying and when he did, it was even worst. Everybody remembers him, respects him, loves him...I wonder if they remember Jesus at all? And why are they crying so much if supposedly he went to heaven? I would be happy and relieved that he has rested from his sickness and finally has gone to the presence of God. But since they don't know...they cry and they mourn. I do not like to see so many people worshiping a man, and just a man. And of course along with talk about him, inevitably comes the talk about Mary and that she is receiving him in heaven. There are so many virgins and saints that Catholics worship, that they forget about the one and only one. Jesus. He is the only Way, the only Truth, the only Life. He is not one of the ways, but the Way; not one of the truths, but the Truth; not one of the lives, but the Life.

When my dad got home I told him "the pope died" and he goes "I know I heard, he was a good man and he is probably in heaven". I said then "you don't know that, only if he accepted Jesus", he goes like "how can you say that, he is a saint, he was so good, he was the leader of the church". I probably rolled my eyes I don't remember, and said "remember that is not by works, or by how good we are, if that was the case why would we need Jesus then?". Then he didn't tell me anything else. People still think that it is all about us. It has nothing to do with us, and everything to do with Jesus.

One of the things that upsets me the most is the idolatry within the catholic church. They worship so many "saints" and "virgins". And they give such an important place to Mary. Tell me about it that I live on a mostly catholic society. People tell kids when they are misbehaving: "don't do that, if you do God is going to punish you!". And they say "let's ask the Virgin so that she can ask her son". They put in you the idea that God is bad or hard and that he is going to punish you. And that one of the ways to get to Jesus or God is if you pray to Mary, she will soften him and then he'll listen to your prayer. It's sickening. The Bible says that "my people perish because of lack of knowledge", and it's true. Do they really believe that this man was better than any of us? He was like any of us, but they have elevated him to an idol.

When I was watching the news they were saying that in approximately 15 days we'll know who the new pope is going to be, then they started mentioning the cardinals that are candidates and said that there is one that is Jewish and if he makes it he will be the first Jewish pope besides saint Peter...I thought "Peter must be clenching his jaw in Heaven". Where in the Bible says that Peter was the first pope? where is the word pope mentioned in the Bible?.

Let me end it here because once I get started I get carried away.
